Vishakhapatnam has seen various dynasties extend their conquering it, such as the Ikshvakus, the Pallavas, the Chalukyas, the Cholas, the Gajapati Kingdom, the Kakatiyas, the Vijayanagar kings, the Mughals and the British. Its history unfolds all the way to the 6th century BC. Relics unearthed in the region point to the existence of a Buddhist empire in the region. Ashoka also presided over this area being a part of the Kalinga region and later on, it came under the Vengi kingdom, the Pallava and Eastern Ganga dynasties.
It was conquered by the Mughals in the 16th century and later the Nizams took the reins during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Eventually, European powers set up trading interests in its vicinity and towards the latter part of the 18th century it came under French dominion. In 1804, the British laid their hands on it till India's independence in 1947. Post-independence, Visakhapatnam developed into one of the country's primary ports and became the headquarters of the Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy. Vishakhapatnam has developed as an international seaport, resulting in bustling trading and commercial activities which in turn play an important role in the economy.
It is well on its way to rapidly expanding into an important industrial hub in the country and numerous companies have set up shops here.
