About Madikeri :
The name Madikeri evolved from ‘Muddu Raja Keri’ which literally means the town of Muddu Raja, once the ruler of this land. Kodagu(Coorg) has been under different empires since 2nd century A.D. like the Kadambas, Gangas, Cholas, Hoysalas and finally Haleris, who ruled till 1834 A.D. The third Haleri king, in 1681, built the Madikeri Fort which was earlier constructed in mud. Later, it was reconstructed during the reign of Tipu Sultan in granite and was named as Jaffarabad. Madikeri became a part of the British Empire during colonial rule in India, in 1834 A.D. Madikeri is known for its brave men who have served in the armed forces of India before and after independence. Madikeri is a small town with many tourist destinations of historical and cultural importance, natural beauty and options for adventurous activities.
